Best Repair Shop in Plano to Fix Your Mercedes’ Oil Pressure Switch Failure
by europewpadmin April 20, 2021Mercedes cars are revered for their luxury, long-term durability, and their reliability. So with the promise of such quality, finding faults with them can often be a surprise. Mercedes cars can have performance issues just like any other vehicle, but what sets them apart is a set of problems only routinely documented by Mercedes drivers from all over the world. Failure of the oil pressure switch is the most common and well known problem for a Mercedes car, and it is an issue present in multiple models.
Function of the Oil Pressure Switch
Motor oil within a car’s engine is kept under constant pressure so it can be pumped through a series of pipes, hoses, and valves. It is used to lubricate a number of critical components within the engine. Maintaining the level of oil in a car’s engine is so important to the health of the vehicle that some experts recommend it should be checked every 3,000 miles.
The purpose of the oil pressure switch is to monitor the level of oil within a car’s engine. Each car engine has a specific pre-set critical level for its oil, and if the level of oil falls below that or loses its pressure, the switch sends a signal to the car’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) which is indicated by a warning light on the dashboard. If the oil pressure switch stops working, then it may not send a signal to the ECU, and therefore the warning light on the dashboard may not come on.
Some common warning signs of a failure in the oil pressure switch are:
The oil pressure light is on
Checking the level of oil in the engine shows a good level of oil, but a problem with the switch is sending inaccurate readings to the ECU, preventing the light from going out.
The oil pressure light is blinking
Because of a fault with the switch, it is unable to gain an accurate reading of the level of oil, and so can’t establish if the level of oil is too low or not.
The oil pressure gauge is at zero
Older models of Mercedes have a mechanical gauge that gives a readout of the oil pressure to the driver. If the gauge is reading zero while oil levels are correct, then there is a fault with the sensor.
Modern models of Mercedes that have an oil pressure gauge use an electrical signal instead. Even if the level of oil is correct the gauge may still have erratic readings, sit at full, or sit at zero, which indicates a fault.
Snowballing Oil Problems
Driving with insufficient levels of oil or with oil that lacks pressure could cause a number of the engines critical components to grind against each other, causing them damage which could lead to potentially irreparable engine failure. It is important for drivers to be able to properly monitor the level of oil in their cars engine, but without a correctly working oil pressure switch, this task becomes difficult.
When you notice a failure of your oil pressure switch, it is important to have it checked out by a specialist so you can maintain the health and durability of your vehicle. Replacement of the faulty switch is often the only viable fix for a faulty oil pressure switch, but having the car inspected as soon as you suspect a problem can prevent any associated issues from cropping up.
